Wine Analysis:
0.61% total Acid, 3.57% pH and 13.7%alc/vol.

Vintage:

The 2009 growing season was excellent, one of the better vintages in recent history. The grape harvest began early, stalled mid-way through due to cool weather and finished in late October to vintners accolades. A mild winter with below normal rainfall coupled with a dry spring resulted in early bud burst. The berries were the smallest in the past ten years enhancing quality.

Winemaking:

The grapes were harvested at maximum ripeness while still maintaining optimum acidity levels. While the majority of the blend was fermented in stainless steel, a portion was barrel fermented, contributing a creamy toastiness to the finished wine. A portion of the blend underwent Malolactic fermentation, adding richness and complexity.

Sommelier Notes:

Our Chardonnay displays textbook varietal characteristics, with golden straw color, golden apple and citrus flavors, medium body and crisp yet smooth finish. With its smooth texture and crisp acidity, the wine is an excellent choice before dinner, and pairs magnificently with a wide array of appetizers. It moves into a meal with ease, matching well with grilled or broiled fish and seafood as well as poultry dishes.

  • North Coast

Wine Analysis:
0.58% total acid, 3.62% pH and 13.5% alc./vol

Vintage:

2009 started off with an unusually cold and wet winter, but a heat spell in March started off the growing season early. The rains continued through June and summer was unseasonably cool, leading to fears that the grapes wouldn't ripen completely. Those fears didn't play out. As the summer came to a close, temperatures heated up, allowing the grapes to ripen to full flavor and complexity while retaining high levels of acidity.

Winemaking:

Grapes for this wine were handled gently to minimize bitterness and fermented warm to maximize color and flavor extraction. To the structure and firmness of the Cabernet we added Merlot for suppleness, a touch of Syrah for crisp acidity and structure and Tempranello for a note of red berry fruitiness. The wine was aged for one year in new and used American and French oak.

Sommelier Notes:

The wine is full-bodied and complex, displaying classic Cabernet structure and finesse. A memorable pairing with roasted and grilled meats such as leg of lamb, prime rib or porterhouse steak.

2009 SASSIE California Merlot

Grape Sourcing

Grapes for our 2009 Merlot were selected from among the best warm climate Merlot vineyards in Central Valley and Central Coast, balanced by cooler coastal vineyards for structure. In these areas, warm sunny days provide optimum grape ripening, while Pacific Ocean fog creates cool nights and maintains the acidity in the grapes, resulting in a balanced Merlot full of flavor.

Vintage

2009 started with an unusually cold and wet winter, but a heat spell in March started off the growing season early. The rains continued sporadically through June and summer was unseasonably cool, leading to fears that the grapes wouldn't ripen completely. Those fears didn't play out. As the summer came to a close, temperatures heated up, allowing the grapes to ripen to full flavor and complexity while retaining high levels of acidity.

Winemaking:

After harvest, the fruit was handled gently and fermented in stainless steel to preserve the full fruit flavors in the grapes. After the blend, a portion of the blend was oak aged to add subtle toast and vanilla accents.

Sommelier Notes:

Our Merlot is a rich garnet color, with flavors of plum, cherry jam, and candied barrel vanilla from oak aging, with a soft, smooth finish. With its crisp acidity and ripe fruit flavors, this wine is an easy match with a wide range of main courses, including meats, pasta, and vegetarian dishes.
